The 2026 Hackathon

From January 28 to 31, 2026, Barcelona became a vibrant hub of youth innovation during the 2026 MIT-UPC Hackathon, a large-scale educational initiative designed, organized, and led by Tech Projects.

The event took place simultaneously across three leading engineering schools:

ESEIAAT

ETSEIB

FIB

Over 72 intensive hours, nearly 250 high school students (3rd and 4th year of secondary education) collaborated with more than 50 international mentors from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Italy, Mexico, and the local Tech Projects mentor network.

🎯 A Different Kind of Challenge

Unlike traditional hackathons, this edition was not a competition.
There were no rankings, no corporate briefs, and no fixed business problems.

Instead, Tech Projects proposed a bold and simple framework: Give students freedom, time constraints, and world-class mentorship — and let them build.

The result was pure learning by doing.

🔥 Projects Born in 72 Hours

With full creative freedom, teams developed ambitious engineering concepts, including some like:

  • 🔥 Fire-based spatial systems with structural and control components
  • 🤖 Functional animatronics
  • 🚗 Experimental vehicle prototypes
  • 🍽 Explorations into altering food taste perception

The focus was not on winning.
It was on prototyping, iterating, problem-solving, and presenting under pressure.

🌍 International Mentorship, Global Mindset

One of the defining strengths of the 2026 edition was its international mentor network.

Students worked closely with mentors from MIT, Italy, Mexico, and Barcelona — gaining exposure to:

  • Systems thinking
  • Rapid prototyping methodologies
  • Engineering communication skills
  • Problem solving

This international layer elevated the experience beyond a local educational event, positioning Barcelona as a bridge between young talent and global engineering ecosystems.

🎓 More Than an Event — A Replicable Educational Model

The 2026 MIT-UPC Hackathon demonstrates that:

  • Engineering can be introduced meaningfully before university.
  • Teenagers rise to complex challenges when given trust and structure.
  • Mentorship accelerates learning dramatically.
  • Universities can open their ecosystems earlier in the educational journey.

This is not just a hackathon.
It is a model for experiential engineering education.
