Kicking Off Week 0 at ESTSEIB: Creativity, Energy, and Innovation in Motion
This September marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter at ESTSEIB – Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), where the very first Week 0 kicked off with energy, creativity, and teamwork. Organized by BCN Tech Projects in collaboration with local mentors and educators, this initiative welcomed students into a week-long journey of hands-on challenges, discovery, and innovation.
What is Week 0?
Week 0 is a transition week that takes place before the official start of classes. Each morning, students review key concepts from the batxillerat curriculum in subjects like mathematics and physics. These sessions are designed to strengthen their academic foundation and ensure that everyone starts the semester on solid ground.
But Week 0 goes beyond academics. In the afternoons, students participate in hands-on workshops that introduce them to engineering in a more practical, creative way. From building small prototypes to tackling design challenges, these activities showcase the problem-solving and collaborative spirit that defines engineering.
Why It Matters
The combination of morning classes and afternoon workshops provides students with a unique balance:
- Confidence in knowledge: reinforcing key academic concepts before the first official lecture.
- Practical inspiration: discovering engineering through experimentation, teamwork, and creativity.
- Community building: getting to know classmates, sharing experiences, and creating bonds that will last throughout their studies.
As one mentor summarized: “Week 0 is not just preparation, it’s a welcome into the engineering mindset—where theory meets practice, and students become a community.”
