An Unforgettable International Experience at the MIT Engineering Design Workshop

This summer, two students from Barcelona, 14-year-old Ariadna and 15-year-old Roger, had the opportunity to participate in the Engineering Design Workshop (EDW), organized by the prestigious Edgerton Center at MIT. Along with their mentors, Júlia, a recent high school graduate, and Joel, a university student, they were part of the Barcelona Squad from BCN TECH Projects in this intensive engineering and design program held at Massachusetts University.

Both students attend Thau Sant Cugat and Thau Barcelona schools, respectively, and this workshop allowed them to not only explore their interest in technology and engineering but also connect with American and Italian students in a collaborative and multicultural environment.

What is the Engineering Design Workshop?

The EDW is based on MIT’s educational philosophy of “learning by doing.” Over the course of two weeks, participants work in teams to solve real-world engineering challenges, using advanced resources like maker labs, rapid prototyping tools, and innovative technologies. This hands-on approach fosters creativity, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

The process begins with identifying a technical challenge, followed by brainstorming, conceptual design, and prototyping. Students have the freedom to experiment and fail, learning as much from their mistakes as from their successes. This practical approach not only reinforces technical concepts but also enhances soft skills such as teamwork and communication.

The Experience of the Students

Ariadna and Roger excelled at adapting quickly to the workshop’s fast pace and collaborating effectively with their international peers. “It was exciting to see how our ideas transformed into real prototypes,” said Roger, impressed by the autonomy and access to cutting-edge technology.

Ariadna, meanwhile, highlighted the most memorable moment: the final project presentations to mentors and peers. “The energy in the room was amazing; everyone was proud to showcase their work,” she explained.

The Role of the Mentors

Júlia and Joel, as mentors, played a key role in this experience. They guided Ariadna and Roger not only through the technical aspects of the workshop but also helped them integrate into an international environment. Júlia emphasized the importance of cultural exchange: “We learned so much from the American and Italian teams. It was a space where every contribution added value to the team.”

More Than Just a Workshop

For Ariadna and Roger, the EDW was not just an opportunity to learn about engineering; it was a transformative experience that expanded their horizons and solidified their passion for technology. “We return with new ideas, friends from all over the world, and a clearer vision of our future,” they concluded excitedly.

The Engineering Design Workshop not only reinforces technical knowledge but also leaves an unforgettable impact on its participants, inspiring them to continue exploring, learning, and creating.
